Privacy notice

This notice explains how Money Stories uses personal information when you visit the website or contact us.

Who operates this website

Money Stories, at https://moneystories.co.uk, is operated by Tone Vale Limited. Tone Vale Limited is the data controller for the personal information we process to operate this website and handle enquiries. Contact us about privacy or your information rights at info@tonevale.co.uk.

Our money profiles are illustrative scenarios, not records of real interviewees. Photographs are illustrative stock images.

Information processed when you use the site

  • Website delivery and security: our hosting provider, Replit, and its infrastructure providers may process your IP address, requested pages, access times, browser/device information and technical logs to deliver and protect the site.
  • Cookie preferences: your browser stores your analytics and advertising choices and the time you saved them in local storage under himmm-consent.
  • Optional analytics and advertising: if you give the relevant consent, Google and, for advertising, participating third parties may process cookie identifiers, device/browser information, page URLs, referring pages and interactions. Advertising technology may also process IP addresses and approximate location.
  • Enquiries: if you email us, we receive your email address, the name and other information you choose to include, and your message. Email is handled by the email providers involved in sending and receiving it.

This site has no reader accounts, purchases or newsletter signup. Its contact form is not connected to a submission service and does not send messages; please email us instead. Avoid putting confidential, sensitive or identifying information into the site search or an enquiry unless necessary.

Why we process information and our legal bases

We use information to deliver and secure the website, respond to enquiries, understand readership and support the site through advertising. For website delivery, security, font delivery and routine enquiry handling, we rely on our legitimate interests in operating the publication and responding to readers. Where we must process information to meet a legal obligation, including applicable information-rights obligations, we rely on that obligation.

We rely on your consent for the site's optional Google Analytics and Google AdSense technology. You can refuse these categories and still read the stories. We store your preference to remember and respect your choice. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing based on consent before withdrawal.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics 4 is configured on this site and its tag loads only after you consent to analytics. It helps us understand visits, pages read and interactions, including article views, related-story clicks, filter use and searches. Our custom search event records the length of the search, not the search text; page URLs and their query parameters may nevertheless be included in Google's page measurements.

Analytics uses cookies such as _ga and _ga_* and pseudonymous identifiers. Pseudonymous information is not the same as fully anonymous information. For UK visitors, Google states that Analytics does not log or store individual IP addresses: it uses them to derive coarse location information before discarding them. Our custom events do not intentionally include contact-form names, email addresses or message contents.

Google processes information under its applicable terms and policies. Read Google's Privacy Policy and how Google uses information from sites that use its services. You can also use Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on, where supported.

Google AdSense and third-party advertising technology

Google AdSense is configured on this site. The advertising tag loads only after you consent to advertising. Installing the tag does not mean ads will necessarily be shown: availability also depends on Google's approval, account settings and ad serving.

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet. Where permitted and supported by the applicable consent and settings, this can include personalised advertising.

Google and participating third-party advertising vendors or ad networks may use cookies, local storage, pixels and similar technologies to select, deliver and measure ads, limit repeated ads and detect fraud. Information may include device and browser details, cookie or advertising identifiers, IP addresses, approximate location and browsing or ad interactions. The vendors actually involved can vary between adverts; this is not a claim that every available Google advertising vendor operates on every visit.

Learn about Google's advertising technology, Google's use of cookies and Google's published advertising-technology provider information. Google and other advertising vendors may process information for their own purposes under their respective privacy notices.

You can manage or opt out of Google's personalised advertising through Google Ads Settings. For participating third-party vendors, additional choices are available at YourAdChoices and Your Online Choices. These tools do not replace this site's cookie controls or necessarily stop all ads or all processing; some choices are browser/device-specific.

Cookie consent: managing and withdrawing your choice

The AMP versions of our pages do not currently load Google Analytics or AdSense. They use the AMP runtime from cdn.ampproject.org; requests to that service disclose connection information such as your IP address and browser details. If you view a cached AMP page through a search or other platform, that platform may also process information under its own privacy notice. Main-site cookie choices do not automatically transfer to AMP or cached views. Use the AMP footer's full-site link to manage the main site's preferences.

Our banner offers Accept all, Reject non-essential and Manage preferences. Analytics and advertising are separate choices and are not loaded by our site code before you opt in to the relevant category.

  1. Select Cookies in the footer of any page, or use the button below.
  2. Turn off Analytics and/or Advertising.
  3. Select Save preferences. When you withdraw a previously accepted category, the page reloads to stop that category's scripts loading on subsequent page views.

Full-site cookie settings

Withdrawing consent does not automatically erase cookies already set or delete information already received by a provider. Use your browser's cookie/site-data settings to remove existing cookies and local storage; deleting our saved preference makes the banner appear again. Your choice applies to the browser and site origin where you save it, not automatically to other devices or domains. Browser blocking controls can provide additional protection.

See our cookie policy. The site's existing banner is a custom consent control; it is not a Google-certified consent-management platform. This notice does not certify that Google's separate consent-management requirements for personalised ads in the UK, EEA or Switzerland have been met.

Other services and external links

  • Replit hosting: website delivery and infrastructure. See Replit's Privacy Policy.
  • Google Fonts: the Newsreader and Public Sans fonts load from Google's servers when a page opens, independently of the analytics/advertising choices. These requests disclose your IP address and request headers, which may include browser information and the referring page. Google states its Fonts API does not set or log cookies or use the information for targeted advertising. See Google Fonts privacy information.
  • Google Analytics and AdSense: the consent-gated services described above.
  • Stock-photo credits and sharing links: story photographs are hosted with this website, not embedded from Unsplash. Clicking a credit or a social-sharing link opens an external website subject to its own privacy policy. Social-sharing buttons are links, not embedded social-network tracking widgets.

We may disclose relevant information to professional advisers or authorities where necessary to deal with legal obligations, protect rights or handle a dispute. We do not operate a connected newsletter provider or third-party contact-form submission service on this site.

International processing

Providers such as Google and Replit operate internationally, so information may be processed outside the UK. The applicable protections depend on the recipient and service, and can include a UK adequacy decision or approved contractual safeguards where required. See the linked provider notices for their transfer arrangements. Contact info@tonevale.co.uk for information about safeguards relevant to personal information we control.

Retention

The site's saved consent preference has no automatic expiry in the current implementation; it remains in your browser until you change it or clear site data. We retain enquiry correspondence only as long as needed to handle the enquiry and any relevant legal obligations or disputes. Provider logs, Google cookies and analytics or advertising records are retained according to their purpose, applicable service/account settings and provider policies; the website code does not set a single retention period for all of them. Removing a browser cookie does not itself delete provider-held records.

Your UK privacy rights

Under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, as amended, you may have rights to:

  • be informed about use of your personal information and request access to it;
  • correct inaccurate information and request deletion;
  • restrict processing and object to processing based on legitimate interests;
  • receive and transfer information you provided where the right to data portability applies;
  • withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier lawful processing; and
  • request applicable protections relating to solely automated decisions with significant effects.

These rights depend on the circumstances and are not all unconditional. We do not make solely automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects about readers; personalised advertising may involve profiling by advertising providers.

To exercise a right or raise a concern, email info@tonevale.co.uk. We may ask for proportionate information to verify your identity and locate the relevant records. We normally respond within one month, subject to lawful extensions or other applicable rules. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
